Panchayat polling begins in Assam, Police opens fire on man who attempted an attack

Guwahati: With the first phase of Panchayat polling taking place across Assam since 7 in the morning on Wednesday, voters coming out to access their right to vote can be seen in a large number in all the 16 districts of the state. The election commission, amidst the huge rushes and humdrum of the political parties and their members, has made sure that no hole is left in the security of the polling stations, polling officers and the general voters.

As pre-scheduled the voting in the polling stations has begun at 7 in the morning will conclude at 3.30 p.m.

The 16 districts of the state that are witnessing polling in its respective polling stations include Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Nagaon, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Morigaon, Kamrup (M) and Kamrup.

However, an exclusive report coming from a polling station in Habiyal village of Golaghat says that while a miscreant was trying to attack some police officials present in the polling station, which led the police to open fires on him. The man identified as Gyanendra Rajkhowa is injured with a bullet in his leg and is rushed to Swahid Kushal Konwar hospital. As reported by witnesses and the police, the alleged attacker had attacked another four people as well before finally trying to attack the policemen.
