Guwahati: On Friday, four minor girls aged between eight and 10 drowned in a pond at Damugaon under Panbari Police Station in Chirang district . The deceased have been identified as eight-year-old Mashuma Khatun, nine-year-old Rakiba Khatun, eight-year-old Sanjuma Khatun and 10-year-old Suhana Parbin. Two of the girls were residents of Tekaimari village, while the other two lived in Damugaon.

Chirang District Senior Superintendent of Police Dhruba Bora said the girls were suspected to have fallen into the pond while playing after school hours. Police have launched an inquiry to confirm the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

The tragedy has sparked concerns among the people of that over the safety of deep ponds and excavated water bodies in the area. Villagers claimed that several ponds had been dug to depths of 20 to 30 feet without adequate safety measures.

People of Tekaimari village urged the government to regulate pond excavation and introduce safety measures to prevent such incidents. People of the village also appealed to the state government to provide financial assistance to the bereaved families.
