Guwahati: Assam has achieved a major milestone in livestock biotechnology with the birth of the world’s first IVF-born female calf of the Lakhimi breed, marking a significant breakthrough in efforts to conserve and genetically improve the state’s indigenous cattle.

The calf was born at the IVF Laboratory of the College of Veterinary Science, Assam Veterinary and Fishery University, Khanapara, Guwahati. The laboratory was established with financial support under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission.

As per the institution, the calf was produced through in-vitro embryo production using an embryo developed from a pure Lakhimi donor cow and semen from a pure Lakhimi bull. The embryo was then transferred to a crossbred recipient heifer, resulting in the birth of the female calf.

The achievement is expected to strengthen efforts to conserve and multiply Lakhimi cattle, Assam’s only registered indigenous cattle breed. It could also help increase the population of genetically superior animals while preserving the breed’s distinctive characteristics.

The milestone highlights the growing role of assisted reproductive technologies in livestock breeding and the conservation of indigenous genetic resources in Assam.
