Silchar: Smt. Kavitha Padmanabhan, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Assam, Department of Housing and Urban Affairs, conducted an extensive visit to Silchar on Tuesday to review the town’s urban infrastructure, civic amenities, and sanitation systems. The visit aimed to assess current conditions, identify key gaps, and accelerate the pace of improvements to ensure sustainable urban development.

As part of her field inspection, Smt. Padmanabhan visited critical locations under the jurisdiction of the Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC), including major markets, arterial roads, municipal dumping yards, and boundary zones of the Urban Local Body (ULB). She examined issues related to solid waste management, sanitation, and overall civic maintenance. The Commissioner & Secretary was accompanied by SMC Commissioner Smt. Srishti Singh, IAS, Executive Officer Shri Nabuttam Sharma (AUAS), municipal officials, and representatives from Shristi Waste Management. The team interacted with ground-level staff to understand operational challenges and observe the day-to-day realities of civic service delivery.

A major focus of the visit was the persistent problem of waterlogging in Silchar during the monsoon. Smt. Padmanabhan visited flood-prone areas such as Rangirkhal, Longai Khal, and Sonai Road to personally evaluate drainage issues and plan remedial actions. Her on-site assessment was aimed at facilitating effective solutions for these recurring challenges.

Following the field inspection, a comprehensive review meeting was held with municipal officials and other stakeholders. Discussions centered around service delivery gaps, solid waste disposal inefficiencies, and the need for better drainage systems. The Commissioner & Secretary stressed the importance of timely interventions, inter-agency coordination, and accountability to ensure visible improvements that positively impact residents.

During the meeting, Smt. Padmanabhan reiterated the Assam Government’s vision of transforming urban centers into clean, liveable, and sustainable environments. She highlighted the role of strong planning, community participation, and effective implementation in achieving this goal. The visit concluded with actionable directives for the Silchar Municipal Corporation to address existing issues and accelerate improvement measures. The Department of Housing and Urban Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to making Silchar a model of urban management and civic development.
