GUWAHATI: Today marks International Women's Day (IWD), a global annual event dedicated to marking women and girls' achievements while advocating for gender equality. The year's theme, 'Accelerate Action,' highlights the urgency of taking prompt and timely action to advance women's rights and correct imbalances.
International Women's Day originated during the early 1900s when there was so much social turmoil and women started protesting for improved working conditions, equal pay for equivalent work, and the right to vote. The Socialist Party of America started the first National Women's Day in 1910, followed by other events in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland in 1911.
In 1975, March 8 was officially declared by the United Nations as International Women's Day to reaffirm its commitment to promote women's rights and global peace. Today, IWD is a highly significant platform on which significant issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and women's violence come into the fore.
The significance of International Women's Day lies in the ability to mobilize collective action and cooperation in the fight for women's empowerment. It provides a platform for the removal of barriers that limit women and girls globally, calling for advocacy and protection of their rights. As communities around the globe celebrate together, the focus is on the need for continued action to achieve gender equality and strive for equality for all.
