

Guwahati: On Friday evening, the Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah inaugurated the newly constructed Kalamati Wildlife Range Office at Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary in Sonitpur . The new office is expected to strengthen forest administration at the field level and improve wildlife protection and conservation efforts within the sanctuary. The office will also support forest personnel in carrying out their duties more effectively and responding to conservation challenges in the area.
Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary is an important biodiversity hotspot in Assam and supports a diverse range of flora and fauna. The sanctuary is also home to the White-winged Wood Duck, Assam’s state bird and a species of significant conservation importance.
The inauguration of the new range office marks an important step towards improving infrastructure for forest management and wildlife conservation in the region.
The facility is expected to provide better support to field-level forest officials and strengthen monitoring and protection activities across the sanctuary.
The development comes as part of ongoing efforts to improve conservation infrastructure and safeguard Assam’s rich biodiversity and wildlife habitats.
