Meghalaya Seeks Assam Talks Over Concerns of Tourist Taxi Operators

Shillong: The Meghalaya government will initiate discussions with Assam to resolve concerns raised by tourist taxi operators over difficulties allegedly faced while travelling to Guwahati and other parts of the neighbouring state.

A joint meeting involving authorities from both states has been proposed by September 10. The decision followed a meeting between senior Meghalaya government officials and representatives of tourist taxi associations.

Representatives of the taxi operators apprised officials of issues they claim to have encountered after entering Assam. The state government said the concerns require inter-state coordination and assured the representatives that the matter would be taken up with Assam authorities.

The proposed meeting will bring together the Transport Commissioners of Meghalaya and Assam, along with representatives of tourist taxi associations from both states. Discussions will focus on finding practical solutions and creating a common mechanism to ensure hassle-free movement of tourist vehicles.

The Meghalaya government, meanwhile, clarified that there is currently no blockade or restriction on vehicular movement between the two states. Tourist taxis are operating normally on the Assam-Meghalaya route.

The government said it is committed to protecting the interests of tourist vehicle operators and preventing disruptions to the tourism sector.

The outcome of the proposed inter-state meeting will determine further measures, with authorities aiming to settle the issue through coordination rather than allowing it to affect travel and tourism between Assam and Meghalaya.
