

Chennai: Veteran South Indian actress Sowcar Janaki, one of the most respected names in Indian cinema, passed away in Chennai on Friday at the age of 94.
Born Sankaramanchi Janaki, the legendary actress breathed her last at a private hospital following age-related health complications.
Sowcar Janaki had an illustrious career spanning several decades and appeared in nearly 400 films across South Indian languages. She began her acting journey in 1950 and went on to establish herself as a prominent performer in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and other regional cinema.
Over the course of her career, she received several major honours for her contribution to Indian cinema. These include the Padma Shri, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, two Nandi Awards and the Kalaimamani Award.
Known for her versatility and powerful performances, Sowcar Janaki remained an influential figure in South Indian cinema for generations.
Her death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in the history of Indian regional cinema. Fans, fellow actors and members of the film fraternity have mourned the loss of the veteran performer.
