Guwahati: The voice of Assam’s late musical icon Zubeen Garg will be part of the official Census Song for Census 2027, with a slightly modified version of a song he had recorded more than a decade ago for the Census being adopted for the upcoming population exercise.

The Census Song was launched on Thursday at the Directorate of Census Operations, Assam. The song was written by Pankaj Chakravarty, District Commissioner of Kokrajhar, and features Garg’s original voice.

Officials said Garg’s voice is expected to help create greater public awareness and encourage people across Assam to participate in Census 2027.

The launch programme was attended by Director of Census Operations, Assam, Biswajit Pegu, noted film producer and Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, Additional Secretary of Assam’s General Administration Department Partha Pegu, Kokrajhar District Commissioner and lyricist Pankaj Chakravarty, Deputy Registrar General Bharti Chanda and Joint Director of the Directorate of Census Operations, Assam, Dr Nijara Sharma.

District Information and Public Relations Officer Komal Doley, along with officials and staff of the Directorate and other distinguished personalities, were also present at the event.

The song, originally recorded by Zubeen Garg more than a decade ago, has been given a slight modification for its use in Census 2027.

The launch comes as authorities prepare to mobilise public participation for the nationwide census exercise, with the iconic singer’s voice expected to add an emotional and cultural connect to the campaign in Assam.
