64 suicide cases reported in Guwahati in first two months of 2023

GUWAHATI: Mental health is now a matter of serious concern in the city of Guwahati, as the police records reveal a total of 64 incidents of suicide have been reported in the city between January 1 and February 28, 2023, while 211 cases were recorded across the state during the period.

According to the records, the number of incidents of suicide has seen an increasing trend over the past few years. 259 incidents took place in 2016, 342 in 2017, 357 in 2018, 356 in 2019, 369 in 2020, 384 in 2021, and 396 in the last year in Guwahati alone. The state itself has recorded a huge number of suicide cases over the past few years. 3023, 2276, 2379, 2370, 3243, 3262, and 2000 are the total number of such incidents across the state from 2016 to 2022. The first two months of 2023 have seen 21 cases.

The capital city has also seen a growth in the number of other crimes. In the months of January and February, the city has witnessed 10 cases of deaths, 97 incidents of crimes against women, 34 incidents of kidnapping related to women, 410 cases of theft, 1 case of dacoity, and 9 cases of rape. In the year 2022, 74 cases of deaths, 744 incidents of crimes against women, 308 incidents of kidnapping related to women, 2832 cases of theft, 7 cases of dacoity, and 62 cases of rape were registered in Guwahati.
