GUWAHATI: With a positive mindset most of the students of Assam want to make 2020 a remarkable year with virtues like peace and development, both on individual and social fronts. They want that the ‘vices’ of 2019 do not revisit the State.

* Parashar Kalita, Gauhati University: The year 2019 began with protest against the CAB and ended with protest against the CAA. The year experienced curfew and ban on internet as well. The government turned ‘dictators’ and spelt doom for the hopes and aspirations of the people of the State. We hope 2020 to be a better year with Chief Minister Sarbananda to be among the people of the State.

* Dipjyoti Gogoi, Gauhati University: As a student we’ve started observing our society, besides studying. We’ve witnessed that our society is yet to proceed the way that the present time demands. The prime reasons behind this are that our people are not aware because they’re not educated enough. A nation can never witness all-round development as long as people are not conscious. We need to be conscious and aware politically, economically and socially in order to formulate the Assam of our dream. Without having these ability all the movements that we’re taking will go in vain. So I want that our resolution on this New Near should be to work for development through education.

* Devahuti Rajbongshi, Cotton University: Amidst busy and hectic schedule everyone use to find themselves with happiness and sorrow. Each one of us wishes that the New Year will bring joy and prosperity. Every time we used to enjoy the New Year with family members and friends, but the semester examination has been postponed because of the current scenario. So, even though the year ended with a bad tone I hope the wish of each one of us gets fulfilled and stability to prevail in Assam.

* Aradhana Bordoloi, Cotton University: In the year 2020 I would like to see more change in different areas of development. In Assam the government should invest in infrastructure and the human resources to generate entrepreneurs and jobs. I do want more Assamese people to be able to have a better life here and go outside for a better life.

I would also like to see a lot of social changes as well. I want people to adopt a scientific mindset and a rational way of thinking, getting rid of superstitious thinking such as belief in witchcraft. But at the same time I would also like society to be more empathetic towards the less fortunate and others in their life. I believe this compassion should also extend to animals which are sometimes mistreated in cruel ways.

Lastly, I want more protections for the indigenous populations residing in the Northeast and give a permanent solution to end illegal immigration and I want more people, especially in government bodies to help create awareness about North Eastern States in other parts of India: its culture, social issues, and history.

* Sulakshana Khatoniyar, Cotton University: January 1, 2020 is not only ushering in a new year but a whole new decade. Considering the present state of affairs, however, the spirit of the New Year perhaps seems to be somewhat dampened amongst the youth. As much as I’d like to welcome the New Year with zest and joy, I cannot help but think about the atrocities the youth across the country had to face over the past month or so. While offering my deepest condolences to those who lost their lives, I welcome the New Year with a heavy heart.

I sincerely hope 2020 to be a year of peace and stability across the world. As far as the government is concerned, I expect more transparency, accountability to the people and the liberty to exercise our rights.

May 2020 be year of tolerance and inclusiveness. May the New Year bring forth abundant opportunities. In this era of mechanization, let us devote some time to our mental health and wellbeing. Let us indulge more in our interests and hobbies. Let us be grateful for whatever we have while trying to better ourselves in whatever way we can.

Lest we forget, climate crisis is real and it’s occurring at an unprecedented rate. May this year be a year of environmentalism and climate activism.

Let us be more kind and compassionate to each other. Let us be more humane. Concluding with Bernie Sander’s quote “The human spirit, may it never be extinguished”.

* Lakhiprasad Dihingia, Research Scholar Dibrugarh University: Afloat in a state of indiscipline and uncertainty, we need a united and stable society paving the way for social and mental development. Let Assam form a democratic government through sound mobilization of opinion to replace the existing fascist one. Our primary wish is not to allow the unrest and unpleasant events of 2019 revisit 2020. Let 2020 play a frontal role in keeping the identity of individuals and the State intact.
