GUWAHATI: Several Congress leaders of the state, including APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah and former MP Ripun Bora, were detained today during the party's statewide protest against the death of party leader Mridul Islam in front of the Raj Bhawan on December 18. The police also detained National Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib, who came to Guwahati for the protest, in the hotel where he checked in. The APCC president was released later.

The party staged the protest in support of the demand for an independent inquiry into the death of Mridul Islam. The party declared Islam a martyr.

Thousands of Congress cadres and leaders gathered at the Manabendra Sarma Complex at Dispur Last Gate. However, the police kept them confined in the complex with barricades. The Congress workers staged a dharna at the site.

A procession was taken out by APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah and Ripun Bora from Ghoramara. Their destination was Manabendra Sarma Complex. However, the police stopped them at Hatigaon Chariali, where they detained Bhupan Bora, Ripun Bora, and many others. While the police took Bhupen Borah to the Tenth Battalion camp at Kahilipara, they took Ripun Bora and others to Basistha Police Station.

Meanwhile, an advocate, Reetam Singh, lodged an FIR at Dispur Police Station for, what he said, wrongful restraint and illegal confinement of Uday Bhanu.
