GUWAHATI: Opposing the Assam government's decision to appoint 50 percent of retired teachers in the model colleges in the state, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has proposed a roadmap for the appointment of experienced teachers without depriving the educated unemployed in the state.

A letter sent to the Chief Minister from AASU president Utpal Sarma and general secretary Samiran Phukon said, "Apart from assistant professors, the government should create at least a post of associate professor in each of the departments that can be filled with experienced teachers. If the government feels the services of retired teachers in model colleges are indispensable, it can additionally appoint them as guest faculty. If the government suspects the efficiency of newly appointed teachers for administrative duties related to OQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) and NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council), it can appoint in model colleges one or more teachers for administrative works like registrars in universities even as such appointments are not necessary after the appointment of associate professors."

The AASU also opposed the appointment of new teachers with a fixed salary of Rs 50,000 for three years in the model colleges, as that will put the teachers towards uncertainty. "Like other provincialized colleges in the state, the teachers of model colleges should get job and financial security right from the day of their appointment," the statement said, and demanded immediate intervention of the Chief Minister into the matter.
