GUWAHATI: The political parties in Assam, including the BJP, Congress and the AIUDF,, condemned the dastardly attack on tourists at Pahalgam in Srinagar yesterday. Reacting strongly to the brutal massacre by terrorists, Assam Pradesh BJP president and MP Dilip Saikia expressed deep anguish. He stated that this barbaric attack has plunged the entire nation into mourning and stunned the global community.

“Typically, we understand terrorism as the indiscriminate killing of innocents through gunfire, bombings, and chaos. However, the Pahalgam incident has revealed a more targeted and communal character of terrorism. The attack on April 22 was not merely the killing of a few tourists—it was a fierce assault on Indian civilization, culture, and the Sanatan system,” Saikia said.

The State BJP president further expressed his dismay, pointing out how some intellectuals have shown sympathy towards terrorists—from Afzal Guru, the mastermind of the Parliament attack, to Burhan Wani, who incited violence in Kashmir. These individuals’ conduct has contributed to terrorism evolving in newer and more dangerous forms, he said.

To fully implement the zero-tolerance policy against terrorism under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it is crucial to eradicate all forms of terrorism completely, he said.

“Under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the people of India are united and ready to take a firm stand against terrorism. Following the Pahalgam attack, the central government immediately launched a counter-terrorism operation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah rushed to Kashmir with a full security team, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his foreign tour and returned overnight,” he said.

In his X handle, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) presidentBhupen Bora said, “I am terribly shocked at how mindless terrorism can bring darkness to the lives of so many innocent people. I ask everyone: what crimes did the tourists in Pahalgam commit to deserve this?   Thereforee, even though my duty calls in this campaign season, I began my meetings with a minute’s silence for those departed.  Needless to say, there must be zero tolerance forr terrorism and such dastardly acts.”

He further said, “But, while taking the strictest of actions, we must also remember that Kashmir and its people are known for their love for peace and warm hospitality. The inherent message of Kashmiriyat, symbolising harmony and peace, is deep-rooted in its culture. Thus, such an attack strikes at the very heart of Kashmir’s ethos.”

AIUDF president Maulana Badruddin Ajmal also condemned the brutal terror attack in Kashmir. In a statement, Ajmal said, “I am deeply shocked and saddened by the inhuman and barbaric act of terror that has taken the lives of innocent civilians in Kashmir. This heinous crime is not only a direct assault on human values but also a grave attempt to disrupt the peace and harmony of our country. Such acts of terror are absolutely unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms. I, on my behalf and on on behalf of our party AIUDF, strongly condemn this cowardly attack.”

He said, “The terrorists behind this massacre must be punished promptly and severely. Every culprit, every individual and nation that was involved in planning and executing this attack must face stringent punishment and severe consequences so that such evil is never repeated on our soil. We stand firmly with the Government of India against all those forces who attack our citizens and try to disturb the peaceful environment of our nation.”
