GUWAHATI: The Brahmin Coordination Committee has submitted a proposal to the Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, through the District Commissioner of Kamrup Metro, seeking the formation of a Brahmin Development Council to address the socio-economic, educational, and cultural development of the indigenous Brahmin community in the state.

The proposal cites Government Notification No. SJED.E-256047/7 dated December 26, 2022, which facilitates the establishment of Development Councils for different communities. The committee emphasized that such a council would focus on key areas like agriculture, education, health, and infrastructure, ensuring targeted strategies for the upliftment of the indigenous Brahmin population.

According to the memorandum, around 15-16 lakh indigenous Brahmins reside in Assam, with nearly 80% living below the poverty line. The committee believes that the proposed council will enable better monitoring and implementation of government schemes, ensuring transparency and accountability.
