Guwahati: Following the attack on Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi’s convoy in Dhing on Sunday, several members of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Police (DGP), Assam, Harmeet Singh, in connection with the incident. In the memorandum, the party demanded some immediate measures, such as a comprehensive review of the law-and-order situation across the state. The memorandum further demanded the issuance of explanation calls to Superintendents of Police (SPs) in districts where incidents of political violence have occurred, and the identification and immediate arrest of perpetrators based on available video and photographic evidence. The Congress party also demanded the provision of enhanced security for party leaders and candidates.

The memorandum said, “During the ongoing Panchayat elections, we are deeply dismayed to observe that the Assam Police — a disciplined force sworn to uphold the Constitution — appears to be acting in active connivance with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Through our earlier memorandum, we had apprised you of several instances where Assam Police personnel intimidated and obstructed our candidates from filing nominations. We had also reported attacks on our senior leadership.”

The memorandum further stated, “Unfortunately, these incidents are no longer isolated. Yesterday, Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi and Batadraba MLA Sibamoni Bora were physically attacked, and their vehicles vandalized. If elected representatives themselves are unsafe, the peril faced by ordinary party workers can only be imagined. These are not stray incidents; they reveal a systematic attempt to intimidate the Opposition, with the Assam Police acting as a passive spectator, if not an active enabler.”
