GUWAHATI: In a shocking incident, Uday Ghosh, a 20-year-old helper employed with the Water Resources Department, was severely injured by a leopard today at the construction site near the Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge. Ghosh was working near the sixth pillar of the bridge this morning when the big cat charged towards him.

Eyewitnesses have given a chilling description of the incident. One of Ghosh's fellow workers, who witnessed the attack, described how initially he mistook the leopard for a dog.

"It was around 7 am when I saw Uday struggling with what I thought was a dog. But soon I came to know it was a leopard attacking him, and they were wrestling. I saw Uday trying to run away from its clutch," said the worker.

Despite the attack, Ghosh managed to break free and was quickly transported to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). He is reported to be out of danger and is currently receiving treatment.

The situation remains tense as the leopard is reported to be a full-grown adult and has sought shelter on the dredger to be used for bridge constructions.

The forest officials have been trying to corral the animal but without any success. "We can't tranquilize it; it may jump into water, which would result in its death," explained the forest official. Efforts are underway to capture the leopard using a net or by monitoring its movements until dusk.
