GUWAHATI: In what can be considered a compassionate gesture reiterating Indian Oil’s one of its core values, i.e., care, Guwahati Refinery, under its CSR initiatives, has provided financial support to Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) for the procurement of medical instruments for the setting up of a dedicated operation theatre (OT) for carrying out cochlear implant surgeries among the children with severe to profound hearing loss who do not gain adequate benefit from hearing aids.
In a befitting programme organised recently at GMCH, Mr Sunil Kanti, Executive Director and Refinery Head of Guwahati Refinery, inaugurated the dedicated OT in the presence of Prof. (Dr) Achyut Chandra Baishya, Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent, GMCH, senior officers, doctors and the parents of the children who recently underwent the cochlear implant surgery.
Out of the 14 medical colleges in Assam, GMCH is the only medical college that has been carrying out cochlear implant surgeries since 2014. However, the facility in the hospital was not sufficient in comparison to the increasing number of patients for which patients have to wait for a long time for the much-required surgery. However, this dedicated OT with required medical instruments will now help the poor patients in reducing their waiting period for the said surgeries.
In another instance, it may be noted that Guwahati Refinery, under its CSR initiatives, has also provided financial support to GMCH for the procurement of 10 cochlear implant devices for implantation among the children belonging to economically disadvantaged sections of the society. This CSR assistance to the children belonging to economically disadvantaged sections of the society would help in improving the hearing and understanding, thereby improving communication, social interactions and overall quality of life, a press release said.
