Assam Cultural Body Assures Pension, Aid for Veteran Singer Joymati Hazarika Facing Hardship

GUWAHATI: The Cultural Journalists’ Association, Assam, on Saturday visited veteran singer and Nagara Naam artiste Joymati Hazarika at Monpur near Mirza in South Kamrup and extended support amid her financial difficulties. Association organising secretary Hemanta Sarma and associate secretary Gopal Jalan provided her with essential food items, utensils, clothes and financial assistance. They also took responsibility for helping her obtain necessary documents to access artist pension, Orunodoi and other government benefits. The association said it would approach the Department of Cultural Affairs to facilitate pension and other benefits for Hazarika, who had contributed to Assam’s folk culture through mobile theatre and stage performances. Sarma said many artistes who had enriched society through music, theatre and folk culture faced difficulties in their later years and urged society and the media to support them. Jalan appealed to cultural organisations and government departments to ensure that artistes such as Hazarika received due dignity, recognition and benefits.
