Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu Pays Tribute to Tarun Ram Phukan

Guwahati: Deshbhakti Divas organized by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Assam, was held at the courtyard of Janata Bhawan. Attending as a chief guest Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu paid rich tributes to renowned freedom fighter Tarun Ram Phukan.

Dr. Pegu emphasized that patriotism is not merely a slogan but a reflection of every citizen’s responsibility and commitment towards the nation and the state. He remarked, “Tarun Ram Phukan was a multifaceted personality. Though he earned a Barrister’s degree from Britain, he chose to dedicate his life to India’s freedom struggle, setting aside personal ambitions for the greater cause of the nation.”

Dr. Pegu underscored the importance of leadership in the 21st century, stating that for a nation and society to progress, each individual must embrace strong and responsible leadership. He also invoked Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s initiative in instituting Deshbhakti Divas to honour such inspiring figures, adding that remembering and recognizing the sacrifices of our forebears is a duty for all.

To further mark the occasion and educate the younger generation on the legacy of Tarun Ram Phukan, a large-scale quiz competition was held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, with participation from 348 teams. Winners of the competition were felicitated during the main event.

The programme also saw the presence of Minister for Information, Public Relations, Printing & Stationary etc, Pijush Hazarika, who reflected on Tarun Ram Phukan’s contributions to the nation. Earlier in the day, a floral tribute was offered at the statue of Tarun Ram Phukan at the park named after him in Bharalumukh. The tribute was led by DIPR Commissioner and Secretary Kumar Padmapani Bora, along with other dignitaries.

Notably, Tarun Ram Phukan’s grandson, Dr. Hemendra Ram Phukan, DIPR Director Manabendra Dev Roy, renowned quiz master Achinta Sharma, and several family members and admirers of the freedom fighter also attended the event, making it a heartfelt homage to a towering personality of Assam’s history.
