Assamese Filmmaker Dara Ahmed Passes Away at 72 in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Assam's popular filmmaker Dara Ahmed passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati on Monday. He was 72 years.

Earlier, the noted filmmaker was admitted to the city-based Hospital on Sunday after he complained to chest pain and was undergoing treatment in the ICU of the hospital.

Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed his deep condolence at the demise of Ahmed. In his condolence message, shared on the Twitter handle, chief minister Sarma wrote in Assamese: "I am saddened by the demise of popular director of the Assamese film world, Dara Ahmed. His demise has created a vacuum in the Assamese film world. I wish eternal peace for the departed soul and express deep condolence to the bereaved family members."

On the other, state cultural minister Bimal Bora also expressed his condolences at the demise of Dara Ahmed.

Taking to his Twitter handle Assam BJP President and state minister Ranjeet Dass wrote, "Dara Ahmed is a well known name in the world of Assamese film industry and deeply saddened by the demise of the renowned director who made many popular Assamese films. His demise caused a great loss to the Assamese film world."

It is to be mentioned that Dara Ahmed the begin his filmmaking carrier in Assam as an assistant director in one of the most popular Assamese film – "Dr. Bezbarua" which was released in 1969 and was directed by Brajen Barua.

Some of the Assamese films, directed by Dara Ahmed include "Rikshawala", "Jakhini", "Urbashi", "Dhrubatora", "Pooja", "Bordoisla", "Bispuron" and "Devi" (jointly with Sambhu Gupta).

Ahmed leaves behind his wife and a daughter. His funeral was held at Islampur Kabarsthan in Guwahati.
