GUWAHATI: As prayed for, a division bench of the Gauhati High Court comprising Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice Kaushik Goswami granted the last opportunity of three weeks to the state respondents to file an affidavit in opposition in connection to the case number WP(C)/2798/2019 filed by the All Assam Inland Water Transport Workers' Union (AAITWU).

In this writ petition, the petitioner has challenged the validity of the Assam Inland Water Transport Regulations, 2018, particularly the validity of Section 14(1)(k) of the said regulations.

"It is noticed that though the writ petition is pending for the last five years, an affidavit-in-opposition on behalf of the state respondents has not been filed to date. Mr. D. K. Sarmah, learnt additional senior government advocate, prays for the last opportunity to file an affidavit in opposition on behalf of the state respondents."

The bench has asked the court to list the case for its next hearing in the first week of January 2025.
