GUWAHATI: The website of Krishna Kanta Handique Library at Gauhati University was briefly hacked on Monday morning, with officials confirming that the breach lasted around 10 to 15 minutes. The cyberattack, suspected to have originated from Pakistan-based hackers, specifically targeted the library’s “remote login” system.

The breach was first detected early Monday, when users attempting to access digital resources were confronted with pro-Pakistan slogans such as “Dudh mangoge to kheer denge, Kashmir mangoge to cheer denge” and “Pakistan Zindabad.” The incident caused concern among students and faculty who rely heavily on the portal for academic materials.

Library officials confirmed that the system was compromised but emphasized that services have since been fully restored. “The library’s remote login system was hacked in the morning, but the controls have since been fully restored. We urge students not to panic as all services are back online,” an official said.

Initial signs of disruption reportedly began late Sunday night, but the extent of the breach became fully apparent early Monday. The university quickly contacted the Indian Access Management Federation, a cybersecurity agency based in Ahmedabad, to assist in securing the affected system.

The attack disrupted access to essential e-resources, including academic journals, databases, and e-books—tools vital to the university’s research and student communities. Many users reported difficulty in accessing study materials throughout the night and early hours of Monday.

Although no data loss has been reported, the university has launched an internal security audit and is in the process of upgrading its cyber protection protocols. “We’re in the process of upgrading our security protocols to prevent such incidents in the future,” an official added.
