Rangia: In order to minimize the risk of road accidents during the foggy winter season in the district, Kamrup District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra has issued directives to road-related agencies, as well as the police and transport departments, to take proactive measures aimed at considering the possibility of an increase in road accidents, which can result in loss of life, injuries, and property damage due to reduced visibility caused by foggy conditions. All road-related agencies have been instructed to ensure the proper functioning of streetlights and traffic signals.
Additionally, the agencies are directed to install additional reflective road markings and signage, particularly on highways and major roads. They are also directed to encourage the use of fog lights and other safety equipment by motorists and to arrange for the regular trimming of roadside tree branches and clearing of bushes. Agencies have been directed to repair and maintain roads to ensure smooth traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents. They are also instructed to clear roads of debris and obstructions that may hinder visibility, as well as ensure that road construction workers wear reflective jackets. Similarly, the Superintendent of Police and District Transport Officer, Kamrup have been directed to strictly restrict contraflow traffic; implement traffic diversion plans to reduce congestion and accidents; increase the presence of traffic police on the roads to monitor traffic flow and enforce traffic rules; set up adequate number of check points particularly near picnic spots to monitor drink and drive and to take appropriate action against the violators as per laid laws and rules; to encourage all commercial vehicles particularly heavy vehicles and long-distant traverse vehicles, to use retro reflective tapes to avoid low visibility and to organize awareness campaigns to educate the public about safe driving practices during foggy conditions. The District Commissioner has also directed the Joint Director of Health Services, Kamrup, to ensure the readiness of emergency services, including ambulances, to respond promptly to accidents. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has been asked to issue daily weather forecast notices so that people can plan their travel accordingly. DC Mishra emphasized the importance of strict adherence to these guidelines by all departments concerned and stated that non-compliance may result in disciplinary action.
