Guwahati: The 4th Dengrali Theatre Festival, held on December 28 and December 29 at the Dengrali Creators Hub in Sonapur, witnessed a vibrant celebration of theatrical excellence. With performances from theatre groups across Assam and beyond, including Kolkata, the festival brought together artists and audiences in a picturesque open-air setting amidst the serene hills of Sonapur.
Among the standout performances at the festival was Mukti, staged by Naatghar Majuli, a prominent theatre group from Majuli. Written by renowned playwright Dr. Subrat Jyoti Neog and directed by Bhaskar Jyoti Borah, a respected theatre practitioner and researcher, the play captivated the audience with its compelling narrative and stellar performances.
Mukti draws inspiration from the works of legendary Assamese writer Lakshminath Bezbarua, weaving together the stories of Jatiramor Jat, Bhomkerola, and Kashibashi. Through these parallel narratives, the play delves into themes of identity crisis, societal decay, and the quest for liberation. The thought-provoking storyline, coupled with Bhaskar Jyoti Borah’s meticulous direction, held the audience spellbound throughout the performance.
The ensemble cast, including Ashok Kalita, Tina Borah, Pulabika Pegu, Priyatam Das, Ayushmi Kashyap, Kangkan Shiel, Sabin Saikia, Kalyani Hazarika, Dubari Saikia, and Srutaswini Buragohain, delivered powerful performances that resonated deeply with viewers. Their portrayal of the characters’ struggles and emotional turmoil struck a chord, drawing widespread appreciation.
The musical composition, a fusion of traditional Assamese folk tunes, added another layer of richness to the production. Composed by Gangeya Pritom Sarmah, Pranjit Bhuyan, and Jishnu Nandan Saikia, the music complemented the play’s theme, enhancing its emotional impact. Assistant Director Jugantor Janam Gogoi also played a key role in bringing Bhaskar Jyoti Borah’s vision to life, ensuring a seamless execution of the production.
Naatghar Majuli’s Mukti not only showcased the group’s artistic talent but also underscored its commitment to addressing contemporary societal issues through theatre. The performance was lauded by critics and audiences alike, solidifying its place as a highlight of the festival.
The 4th Dengrali Theatre Festival proved to be a platform for artistic exploration and cultural exchange, fostering conversations on identity, freedom, and social change—an ethos powerfully reflected in Naatghar Majuli’s thought-provoking performance.
