GUWAHATI: The Kamrup Metro District Administration has announced a series of dry days in connection with the upcoming second phase of Panchayat elections in Assam.
In a directive issued by the District Commissioner on May 2, the sale of alcohol will be strictly prohibited during key election dates to ensure a peaceful and fair voting process. As per the order, all liquor shops, bars, clubs, hotels serving alcohol, microbreweries, and country spirit outlets within the district must remain closed from 4:30 PM on May 5 until 4:30 PM on May 7. The decision is aimed at maintaining law and order during the polling period.
In addition, May 11 — the day of vote counting — will also be observed as a dry day, with similar restrictions in place. The administration has warned that any violation of the dry day order will invite strict legal action under relevant provisions of the law. Officials have urged business owners and citizens to cooperate in ensuring a smooth electoral process. The second phase of Panchayat elections is expected to see significant voter turnout, and the administration is taking all necessary steps to ensure the polls are conducted in a peaceful and fair manner.
