Assam: Dry Day declared in Sonitpur for Panchayat Elections

TEZPUR: As per a directive from the Excise Department of the Government of Assam, and with an aim to ensure the peaceful conduct of the first phase of the upcoming Panchayat Election 2025 in Sonitpur district, the period from 4:30pm on April 4 till completion of voting process on May 2 has been declared as ‘Dry Day’ in the district. If a re-poll is required, then May 4 will also be included as a ‘Dry Day.’ Additionally, from the day of vote-counting on May 11, until the completion of the counting process, the period will be observed as a Dry Dayas well.

During the ‘Dry Day,’ all retail ‘OFF’ and ‘ON’ shops including club ‘ON,’ hotel ‘ON,’ IMFL (Indian Made Foreign Liquor) shops, wholesale warehouses, and country liquor outlets must remain closed. Any violation of this order will invite strict action under the provisions of the Assam Excise Act and Rules. Treating this matter as an election-related urgency, District Commissioner of Sonitpur district Ankur Bharali has issued this order.
