GUWAHATI: A group of citizens has written to the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, proposing the exploration of Singapore’s pioneering technology that utilizes plastic waste in road construction. This innovative approach has the potential to address environmental concerns while enhancing infrastructure in Assam.

The proposal comes at a timely moment, with the ongoing Advantage Assam 2.0 summit in Guwahati, which has attracted a high-level delegation from Singapore. The citizens’ group suggests collaborating with Singaporean experts to implement this technology in Assam, thereby reducing plastic pollution and improving road infrastructure.

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has successfully conducted trials using clean plastic waste as an additive in asphalt, improving the performance of road segments subjected to heavy traffic. Additionally, start-ups like Magorium have developed technologies to convert plastic waste into a material called NEWBitumen, which has been used to pave roads near Sentosa Sensory Escape.

The citizens’ group, comprising 31 individuals, including Dhrubajyoti Sarma, Dilip Sarma, and Bikash Talukdar, among others, has urged the Assam government to consider the environmental and infrastructural benefits of adopting this innovative technology.
