GUWAHATI: In a major step towards the improvement of working conditions for medical professionals, the government of Assam has sanctioned a policy that offers facilities to faculty and officers in the state-run medical colleges, similar to those available at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The move was taken during a cabinet meeting headed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, with an aim to hold on to talented doctors by providing better benefits and assistance.

The new policy has a number of important provisions for faculty members and professors. When joining a medical college, physicians will be entitled to a car loan arranged by the state government, with the principal amount deducted from their salary and the interest paid by the government. Additionally, an Assured Career Promotion Scheme has been established to support career advancement for medical college professors.

To foster academic growth, the state will allow medical college doctors to attend two national-level seminars each year, with travel and accommodation expenses reimbursed. Furthermore, faculty members will have the opportunity to participate in seminars in Asian countries every two years, and those attending academic events in the U.S. or Europe every three years will have their expenses fully covered.

There are 13 government medical colleges in Assam at present, with 1,200 MBBS seats. But the state has a chronic shortage of specialist doctors and faculty, as reflected in the resignation of 174 doctors from government service between 2019 and 2024. The new policy seeks to solve these problems by making teaching posts more appealing.
