GUWAHATI: In a significant operation, Assam Police apprehended six individuals, including two women, for attempting to exchange Rs 86 lakh in demonetized Indian currency notes for new ones at a hotel in Jalukbari. The arrests were made following a tip-off received by the Jalukbari police station regarding the illicit exchange.

According to police sources, the operation was executed at Danni's Hotel, where the exchange was reportedly set to take place. A team led by Sub-Inspector (P) Bikash Borah booked a room at the hotel and awaited the arrival of the suspects. The police noticed two men, who were later found to be Monjul Haque and Dimbeswar Pathak, coming with two bags. When questioned, the officers found the demonetized notes in their bags.

The police told the suspects to call the other members of the group who were to coordinate the exchange. This resulted in the arrest of two more men and two women, identified as Sambhu Borah, Pinku Bania, Rinu Gogoi and Sunita Kalita respectively. The raid demonstrates the aggressive effort of law enforcers to suppress illegal money transactions and maintain financial controls in the area.

The amount of Rs 86 lakh recovered highlights the extent of the transaction attempted, which has led to further investigations of the network for such activities. The authorities keep tracking and handling similar cases to ensure the sanctity of the financial system.
