Assam starts Electors’ Verification Programme Till October 15

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The State Election Department under the directive of the Election Commission of India (ECI) has started the Electors’ Verification Programme from September 1. The programme will continue till October 15.

The development has come close on the heels of the publication of the final NRC in the State. Though the Electors’ Verification Programme and the final NRC are not interlinked, yet, the ECI's move holds significance insofar as verification of all eligible voters of the country is concerned. On the basis of the ongoing verification programme the draft photo electoral roll will be published in October. The draft will be the basis of the final photo electoral roll scheduled to be published in 2020. As per the last photo electoral roll Assam has 21991112 voters.

Dwelling on the drive, a source of the State Election Department said, “During this drive carried out under the directive of the ECI, the booth-level officials (BLOs) of each polling station will proceed to each house and check several aspects of voters. Besides enrolling new voters (who have attained 18 years of age), the BLOs will also check change of residences of voter(s) and also verify whether any voter has expired but his/her name still exists in the photo electoral rolls.” The documents that would be required to be shown to the BLOs concerned are Indian passport, driving license, Aadhaar card, ration card, any card issued by government or semi-government agencies, bank passbooks or any ECI-prescribed identity cards. Individuals can also logon to www.nvsp.in & Votershelpline mobile app to get details about the verification programme.
