Election Commission Launches Electors’ Verification Programme In Assam

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The Election department of Assam under the directive of Election Commission of India (ECI) has commenced the Electors’ Verification Programme in Assam along with the other parts of the country from Sunday. This comes close on the heels of the publication of the NRC (National Register of Citizens) in the State on Saturday. Though both are not interlinked, however, the ECI move holds significance insofar as verification of all eligible voters of the country is concerned.

Referred to as the “largest voter verification drive”, this special move carried out for the first time by the ECI will continue till October 15. After its completion, drafting of the photo electoral rolls will commence.

Dwelling on the drive, a source of the State Election department said, “During this drive carried out under the directive of the ECI, the booth-level officials (BLOs) of each polling station will proceed to each house and check several aspects of voters. Besides enrolling new voters (who have attained 18 years of age), the BLOs will also check change of residence of voter(s) and also verify whether any voter has expired but his/her name still exists in the photo electoral rolls.”

The documents that would be required to be shown to the BLOs concerned are Indian passport, driving license, Aadhaar card, ration card, any card issued by government or semi-government agencies, bank passbook or any ECI-prescribed identity cards.
