Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Sunday staged widespread protests across the state, demanding justice for Jyoshita Das—an assistant engineer whose tragic death has raised serious questions about deep-rooted corruption in the state.
Congress alleged that the state administration has become completely mired in corruption and malpractice. Jyoshita Das, known for her uncompromising stance against irregularities in the Public Works Department (PWD), had accused senior officials of pressuring her to sign off on incomplete construction projects in exchange for commissions. These accusations, detailed in her purported suicide note, have sparked outrage across Assam.
The Congress party has demanded an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into her death and the broader corruption within the department. Leading the protest campaign, several senior APCC leaders participated in rallies and sit-ins in various districts. In Barak Valley, APCC president Gaurav Gogoi addressed multiple gatherings, strongly condemning the alleged mental harassment Jyoshita endured at the hands of government officials. He assured that the party would persist with its legal and political fight until her family receives full justice.
As part of its coordinated statewide protest, demonstrations were held in district headquarters, including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Jorhat, Charaideo, Nagaon, Lakhimpur, Darrang, and Barpeta.
In Guwahati, the protest was led by District Congress president Swapan Das, with the participation of former MP Ram Prasad Sharmah, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress President Mira Barthakur, APCC administrative general secretary Pradyut Bhuyan, and MLAs Diganta Barman and Baten Khandakar.
In Barpeta, the protest was spearheaded by APCC working president Zakir Hussain Sikdar, while in Bongaigaon, it was led by working president Pradip Sarkar.
