GUWAHATI: The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) has introduced Commerce as an elective subject with a vision to make the students aware of the basic knowledge of Commerce at the school level.
This has come to light from a letter issued to the principals and headmasters by the ASSEB.
In its letter to the principals and headmasters, the ASSEB said, “The main mission of introducing Commerce at the secondary level is to give an idea about different aspects of Commerce and also help to understand the importance of Commerce at the school level itself. Apart from this, it will enable all students to choose and build their prospects and careers in commerce, besides attracting students towards commerce by introducing simple and easy course structure in secondary schools.”
In its suggestions to the schools, the ASSEB said, “Existing teachers of high/higher secondary schools of the subject Mathematics, Statistics, economics, and existing B.Com-qualified teachers of high schools may transact the syllabus and the textbooks of Commerce (An Introduction to Commerce) in class IX and class X. All schools are encouraged to open the Commerce subject as an elective subject and to encourage the students towards acquiring the skill of entrepreneurship. No application for permission will be needed to open the commerce/skill-based subject. At the time of registration of students for class IX level, there will be a provision in the online portal for selecting elective subjects by the students as per their choice. Higher secondary schools having commerce at the class XI and XII level may be the first gateway to introduce the commerce subject at the class IX and X level.”
To facilitate teaching in the newly introduced Commerce subject in class IX, the ASSEB has decided to organise a training programme for the willing teachers. Considering the number of participants, the training may be conducted in batches.
The board requested the heads to provide the names of the teachers to be deputed from their schools by February 28.
