GUWAHATI: The Assam Madhyamik Sikshak aru Karmachari Santha (AMSKS) has urged Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to shift the Mukhya Mantri Lok Sevak Arogya Yojana (MMLSAY) to cashless mode.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, Santha’s general secretary, Gobinda Chandra Kalita, said that the current mode of the MMLSAY does not allow employees full reimbursement of the amount they spend for their medical treatment.

The state government started MMLSAY in 2023 after the AMSKS’ prolonged agitation in support of its demand for a free health insurance scheme for government employees. However, the MMLSAY cannot live up to the expectations of the teachers. Under this scheme, the teachers can reimburse 50-70 percent of their medical expenditure. Many teachers cannot get the right treatment in time as they have to foot the medical bills at first due to the non-implementation of the cashless mode.

The Santha has extended support to the life insurance scheme for government employees as approved by the state cabinet in its September 4, 2024, sitting in Lakhimpur. The government signed an MoU with the SBI, besides publishing an SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) to this effect. Santha said that life insurance is undoubtedly a welfare decision of the government for employees in case of their death and accidental benefits. However, the SOP also includes a health insurance scheme as well, and that makes the employees contribute to two insurance schemes. The Santha said that this health insurance scheme cannot be an alternative to the MMLSAY.

“We, therefore, request the Chief Minister to introduce the cashless mode in the AMSKS,” Santha said.
