Guwahati: In a significant step towards strengthening animal healthcare infrastructure, the Assam government has announced an ambitious initiative to establish a series of modern veterinary hospitals across the state. The plan includes the creation of three state-of-the-art pet care hospitals and several multi-care veterinary centres aimed at providing enhanced medical services for both pets and livestock.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled the initiative on Friday through a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Emphasizing the government’s commitment to animal welfare, Sarma stated, “Specialized care for our furry friends. Government of Assam has taken up a comprehensive plan to develop 3 Pet Care Hospitals which will be operational by the end of 2025.”

According to the announcement, the three pet-specific hospitals will be strategically located in Guwahati, Bokakhat, and Dibrugarh. These facilities are expected to offer specialized and advanced medical services tailored specifically for pet animals. Services will include routine diagnostics, advanced imaging, surgical procedures, vaccinations, dental care, and post-operative rehabilitation, all aimed at providing holistic care for companion animals.

In addition to the dedicated pet hospitals, the government is also planning to establish five multi-care veterinary hospitals in key districts — Kamrup, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, and Sivasagar. These centres will cater to a broad range of animals, including livestock and domestic animals, with a particular focus on addressing the veterinary healthcare needs of rural and semi-urban populations. The initiative is seen as a timely intervention, especially for livestock farmers who often struggle with limited access to quality veterinary care.

Officials have confirmed that all the proposed hospitals, both pet-focused and multi-care, will be equipped with modern medical infrastructure. This includes sophisticated diagnostic tools, advanced surgical units, and the deployment of well-trained veterinary professionals. The state government’s emphasis on modernization and accessibility aims to bridge the existing gaps in veterinary services, ensuring better healthcare outcomes for animals across the region.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Assam government to enhance the veterinary care ecosystem and promote animal welfare as a key developmental priority. Once operational, the new facilities are expected to play a crucial role in disease prevention, treatment, and overall animal health management, thereby also contributing to the state’s agricultural and rural economy.
