SIVASAGAR: The United Construction Workers’ Union, Sivasagar today observed International Workers’ Day with a day-long programme at the Janajatiya Jironi Griha in Sivasagar town. The event aimed to honour the contributions of construction workers and raise awareness about their rights and entitlements.

As part of the observance, a special awareness meeting was organized to shed light on various issues concerning labour rights, workplace safety and government welfare schemes for workers. Brojen Baruah, Assistant Commissioner of the District Labour Department, delivered a detailed presentation highlighting these aspects. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the labour force’s role in building the nation and ensuring their access to safe and just working conditions.

Labour Inspector Prasanna Tayung, attending as a key speaker, remarked that workers are the true builders of the nation. He elaborated on existing government policies meant to safeguard their welfare and security. Tayung also spoke on the issue of gender inequality in the construction sector, especially discrimination faced by female workers, and stressed the need for corrective measures to ensure equal treatment and opportunities.

The event witnessed the participation of over a hundred construction workers. Among the notable attendees were labour leaders Mujibur Rahman and Hiren Rajbongshi, as well as social activist Punaram Mili. Several other prominent citizens and community leaders were also present, lending their support to the cause of labour rights and welfare.
