Guwahati: The Directorate of Social Justice & Empowerment, Assam, organized a solemn event at the Guwahati Blind Higher Secondary School, Latakata, Basistha, on Saturday to mark the observance of World Braille Day. The programme emphasized the pivotal role of Braille as a medium of communication and education for the visually impaired while promoting empowerment and inclusivity. The event was graced by the presence of Atul Bora, Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Dispur Constituency. In his address, he highlighted the importance of fostering an inclusive and equitable society that ensures opportunities for all.

As part of the initiative, smartphones and smart canes were distributed to visually impaired students by the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO). These assistive devices aim to enhance their mobility, independence, and access to information.

The ceremonial distribution of aids and appliances was another key highlight, facilitated by Dr. Harsha Bhattacharjee, President and Trustee of Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, along with other distinguished officials.

Bhaskar Jyoti Manta, Director of Social Justice & Empowerment, Assam, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the dignitaries, participants, students, and their guardians. He underscored the significance of such events in raising awareness and inspiring individuals to overcome challenges through collective efforts.

World Braille Day stands as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of Braille in enabling equal educational opportunities and empowering visually impaired individuals. The Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to advancing initiatives that enhance accessibility and inclusion for persons with disabilities.

The programme witnessed active participation from officials, students of Guwahati Blind Higher Secondary School, and their guardians, making the event a meaningful celebration of resilience and progress, stated a press release.
