GUWAHATI: The upcoming Assamese film Prastawana – The Preamble is set for release and draws its inspiration from the renowned literary work Yatra, written by acclaimed author Dilip Borah. Known for his celebrated novels, short stories, essays, and columns, Borah has earned widespread admiration for his compelling storytelling and impactful narratives, which have captivated a diverse readership over the years.
The film explores how India’s current social and political climate affects students, portraying their entanglement in the country’s complex political framework. Through a sincere and powerful depiction, the film seeks to shed light on the detrimental effects of political interference in the education system, revealing the hidden injustices that arise as a result.
Prastawana – The Preamble also serves as a timely message to today’s youth, underlining the importance of remaining vigilant in upholding democratic values. It aims to educate viewers—especially younger audiences—about the core principles of justice, equality, liberty, and fraternity, which form the foundation of the Indian Constitution and support India’s standing as the world’s largest democracy.
The film is co-directed by Dilip Borah and Manik Roy, with Borah also taking on the role of producer. Manik Roy, a respected name in Assam’s amateur theatre scene, established the Guwahati Shishu Natya Vidyalay in 1998 and has directed numerous acclaimed plays at both state and national festivals. The intricate narrative and rich characters of Yatra provided a strong base for the filmmakers to adapt the story into a powerful cinematic experience. Borah also wrote the story and screenplay for the film.
The film’s cinematography is handled by Bitul Das, with Raj Saikia and Bhaskar Dutta serving as assistant directors. Celebrated editor A. Sreekar Prasad is responsible for the film’s editing, while Arnab Bora designs the sound. Gulok Saha is in charge of art direction, and Sumon Phukan supervises costumes.
Uttam Deka serves as the production controller. The film features two songs, composed and arranged by Satya Ranjan Bhuyan and Hiteswar Ray. Leading the cast is veteran actor Tapan Das, supported by a talented ensemble that includes Paarvee Baruah, Hillol Kumar Pathak, Debajit Mazumdar, Aswini Kumar Bhuyan, Abatosh Bhuyan, Kaushik Nath, RK, Simanta Raj Sarma Kondoli, and Antara GG Choudhury. The film, which has recently received its censor certification, is expected to add significantly to the ongoing dialogue around the intersection of literature and cinema in contemporary culture, stated a press release.
