Basistha Police wrapped up two separate criminal cases in quick succession, arresting five individuals in connection with a bag-snatching incident and a string of burglaries across different parts of Guwahati.

The first case began with a bag-snatching reported from Jayanagar. Within six hours, police had tracked down and apprehended two habitual offenders — Bitu Das of Birubari and Monowar Ali of Fancy Bazar.

The accused had targeted a victim and fled with their belongings, but a swift police response cut their escape short. Recovered items included a POCO mobile phone, a key with locket, and cash of Rs 100. Officers also seized a Honda Activa scooter that had previously been stolen from Christianbasti and was used to carry out the crime. Additional recoveries included multiple mobile handsets and a ladies handbag.

In a separate operation driven by intelligence inputs, police arrested two experienced burglars — Nitul Medhi alias Ramani and Dipak Kumar Sah — along with a habitual receiver of stolen property, SK Maidul Islam, in connection with theft incidents reported from Gorchuk.

Searches that followed led officers to Lakhtokia, where a haul of stolen valuables was recovered. These included gold ornaments — a locket, earrings, ear tops, nose rings, bangles, and pieces of melted gold weighing nearly five grams — along with cash of Rs 18,700 and a Vivo V40 mobile handset.
