Beating The Heat: Special Arrangements For Giving Zoo Animals A Respite

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: Beating the heat is not at all an easy task. The prolonged heat wave in the State and rest of the Northeast has made all creatures, let alone the man, have a harrowing time. The heat is so intense that it is intolerable for animals in the State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden in Guwahati. The Zoo authorities have to take a lot cooling measures so as to give the animals a respite.

This reporter who paid a visit to the Zoo on Tuesday saw that the veterinary doctors have identified animals like tiger, cat, bear and some other species that cannot tolerate high temperature, and adopted various means to keep them cool. Two pools have been put in place in their enclosures, besides making arrangements for artificial shades with thatched bamboo structures so that animals can take shelter under them. For birds extra boxes have been put in place. For aquatic animals like crocodiles, hippopotamus etc, their ponds have been filled to the brim so that the water doesn’t become too hot. Even along with water ORS have been mixed so as to make the animals free from dehydration. Veterinarians have been making frequent visits to the animal enclosures, ponds etc.
