Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested Ajay Kumar alias Raju Gupta, former Director of Idol India Group of Companies, from Kolkata. The accused had been absconding for several years.

The arrest was made in connection with a case registered by the CBI in 2013, following a notification issued by the Government of Assam and an order by the Supreme Court of India in Writ Petitions (Civil) No. 401/2013 and 413/2013. As per allegations, the Directors of the company, under the names “Idol India Infrastructure Ltd.”, “Idol India Debenture Trust”, and “Idol India Projects Ltd.”, duped thousands of unsuspecting investors across Assam by floating fraudulent schemes that promised high returns, but later misappropriated the collected funds.

Following a detailed probe, the CBI had filed a charge-sheet against Ajay Kumar and others on December 22, 2022, before the Special Judge, CBI Court, Guwahati under Sections 120B, 406, 409, 420 of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 4, 5, and 6 of the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act.

Despite multiple attempts, Kumar had been evading arrest. Acting on credible intelligence, a CBI team successfully traced and apprehended him in Kolkata. He was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, North 24 Parganas, at Barasat, who granted transit remand for his production before the Special Judge, CBI Court, Guwahati.
