GUWAHATI: In an unprecedented incident, a member of the ruling BJP was about to assault an opposition MLA by rushing towards him in the state assembly today. The incident led to a ruckus in the House, leading to a walkout by all opposition members and the adjournment of the House.

During a cut motion relating to the PWD in the House, when ruling party MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi was speaking against the motion, independent MLA Akhil Gogoi intervened, leading to a verbal duel between the two. In the meantime, Independent MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed told Kurmi to look at the chair and not at the opposition bench while speaking. That shifted the verbal duel of Kurmi to Sherman Ali. When the altercation was at its peak, an outraged Kurmi then rushed to Sherman Ali with an attacking pose. However, other MLAs rushed between the two and took Kurmi to his seat.

Soon, the opposition bench raised the demand for either suspension or expulsion of Kurmi from the House for his unparliamentary behaviour.

Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia said that rushing to an MLA with an attacking pose is not the right behaviour in this august house.

BPF MLA Durga Das Boro said, “The onus of providing security to the members in the House, I believe, lies with the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker.”

To bring the situation under control, Deputy Speaker Dr Numal Momin said, “Everybody in the Assembly needs to contribute to keep the dignity of this august House intact. I warn MLA Kurmi not to repeat such behaviour in the future. I appeal to all members of the House not to intervene when an MLA speaks.”

Not satisfied with the Deputy Speaker’s move, the opposition members remained adamant in their demand for the suspension of Kurmi from the House. The entire opposition staged a walkout before the Deputy Speaker adjourned the House.

When the House resumed, Kurmi said, “I got angry as they were repeatedly disturbing me when I was delivering my speech. Be that as it may, I shouldn’t have left my seat. I tender an apology for that.”
