Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB): Artistes Not To Perform in Government Functions

GUWAHATI: Assamese cine actors, singers, musicians, film makes and directors on Tuesday hit the streets in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) and decided not to perform in any government function till the contentious bill was withdrawn.

The artistes assembled at the playground of Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) at Chandmari during the eleven-hour NE bandh call given by the North East Students’ Organization against the CAB. They then took out a procession from the GNB Road to Swahid Nyas, the AASU office at Uzan Bazar.

Welcoming the artistes at Swahid Nyas, the AASU top leaders congratulated the artistes for joining the anti-CAB movement. AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said participation of artists would embolden the movement. He said the Delhi and Dispur have hatched a conspiracy to make the Assamese a backboneless community by bringing the CAB.

Assamese cine actress Barasha Rani Bishaya said “We will not perform in any government function till the government does something either to withdraw the CAB or keep Assam out of the purview of the proposed legislation.” Singer Manas Robin said at a time when the Assamese people are facing the identity threat the artistes cannot remain mute spectator. “Today is the beginning of artistes’ protests. We will intensify our protests in the coming days,” Robin said.
