Congress Busy in Appeasement: Shivraj Singh Chauhan

GUWAHATI: BJP national vice president Shivraj Singh Chauhan has claimed that the first five-year term of Narendra Modi government could bring about much-awaited desired development to Assam against underdevelopment during the previous sixty-year regime of Congress at the Centre.

Addressing a press conference at the State BJP headquarters at Hengrabari here on Friday, Shivraj Singh Chauhan alleged that the previous ten-year regime of UPA under Manmohan Singh was not at all serious about the development of Assam. “Such casual approach of the UPA government existed despite the fact that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh represented Assam in the Parliament,” he said.

Chouhan accused the previous Congress regime in Delhi of exploiting Assam without any development. He claimed that development in Assam took a concrete shape during the first term of the BJP-led government at the Centre (2014-2019).

“During the first term of his regime as PM at the Centre, Modi officially visited Assam for five times besides visit to the State in connection with election meetings. Ministers in Modi’s cabinet visited Assam for 80 times in the same period. Such development is evident of the BJP’s commitment towards Assam’s development,” Chauhan said, adding that the Congress was engaged only in appeasement policy.

Highlighting Assam’s increasing improvement in connectivity with rest of the country, Chauhan claimed that the State has witnessed unprecedented development since Sarbananda Sonowal took the charge of the State in 2016. He recalled as how former PM late Atal Behari Vajpayee made a vision for development of North East by setting up the DONER ministry.

Chauhan, former Chief Minister Madhya Pradesh, advocated implementation of NRC across the country. He also supported the stand of Sarbananda Sonowal on the issue of ongoing NRC update in Assam.

Chauhan who was on a two-day visit to Tripura, Assam and Manipur in connection with the party’s ongoing recruitment drive, on Friday attended two such related events at GMCH auditorium and Kalimandir locality at Pan Bazar. During the GMCH function Assamese cine actor Ravi Sarma and Dr Angshumita Gogoi who helped the Assam Police to unearth the Cash for Job scam in APSC, joined the BJP. Earlier, Chauhan visited Kamakhya temple and Bhubaneshwar Mandir in the city and planted trees.
