Congress invites Asom Jatiya Parishad to join grand alliance

GUWAHATI: The newly formed AJP (Asom Jatiya Parishad) has had its first offer for joining an alliance, from the Congress. The national party offered the AJP to join its grand alliance to topple the BJP.

Addressing the media here on Saturday, APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) general secretary (organization) Ranjan Bora said, "All political parties and formations in the State should get into a huddle to root out the BJP. We're holding talks with the Left parties and the AIUDF on this front. Even though the KMSS (Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti) and the AJP have been criticizing us, we appeal to them also to join the grand alliance to topple the BJP.

"The BJP has been criticizing us for our alliance with the AIUDF. However, the BJP had an understanding with the AIUDF during the Rajya Sabha election and in the formation of zila parishads.

"The BJP has already started taunting the new party AJP formed by the AASU (All Assam Students' Union) and the AJYCP (Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva-Chatra Parishad). We, however, have been welcoming them right from the beginning. Now we're inviting them to join the grand alliance. Even if they don't want to be part of the grand alliance, the Congress has nothing to lose as the new party will erode the votes of the AGP and the BJP. Our alliance is set to get absolute majority in the coming Assembly elections."

Meanwhile, the APCC stated in a press release that it is going to observe Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 by its 27,711 booth committees in the State.

National Students' Union of India (NSUI) president Neeraj Kundan appointed four NSUI members from Assam as the students' body's national coordinators. The four are – Arpita Dutta, Tanvi Tanjum, Ananya Saikia and Angelina Nag.
