PALASBARI: Congress General Secretary in charge of Assam, Jitendra Singh, arrived at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati on Tuesday ahead of crucial party meetings and the scheduled visits of senior leaders Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to the state on Wednesday.
Responding to recent remarks by Assam MLA Akhil Gogoi, who accused the Congress of being ‘arrogant’ about alliance talks, Singh stated, “Akhil Gogoi often makes contradictory statements. As far as alliances are concerned, the Congress is still reviewing all options as the party undergoes an organizational rebuilding phase.”
Taking a dig at the BJP, Singh added, “Just the mention of Rahul Gandhi’s name sends the BJP into frenzy. They panic and lose composure. There’s no need for them to fear Rahul Gandhi, unless they have something to hide.”
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi expressed serious concern over the recent drone strike on ULFA camps in Myanmar. “It’s not foreign nationals, but people from Assam who have been affected. This is a matter of grave concern,” he said, alleging that such an operation could not have taken place without the knowledge of Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma or Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
“The Chief Minister frequently claims to have cordial ties with Paresh Baruah. If that is true, how could such a strike happen without his awareness? This is not ‘Mission Sindoor’—these are attacks on our own people, our brothers,” Gogoi remarked. Addressing questions on alliance-building, Gogoi confirmed that the Congress is in dialogue with leaders and workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). “True alliances are not formed through photo opportunities but through sincere efforts and united action,” he asserted.
Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, also raised questions about the timing of the drone strike. “Why did this attack occur so soon after the tripartite peace talks involving the Centre and the Assam Government? What triggered such an action within just two years of the peace process beginning?” he asked.
The visits and statements made by top Congress leaders have sparked intense political discussions across Assam, particularly in the context of the upcoming Assembly elections and ongoing efforts to forge a united opposition alliance.
