GUWAHATI: The students of Cotton University (CU) have urged the Guwahati Mayor to take up alternative measures after the eviction of food stalls near the university. The recent eviction near the university has caused major problems for the students, as it becomes difficult for them to have lunch in a distant place during short breaks. The eviction by the GMC came at a time when the Students’ Union of Cotton College threatened to undertake a protest against the proposed establishment of a Khao Gully next to their campus.
According to one student, “These shops have been here for a longer period of time. They were affordable, and we can easily spend time during our short breaks.”
Another one said, “The eviction of these eateries has posed a problem for us as we cannot travel much due to a shortage of time just to have lunch. Also, there are students who, after classes, sit at its shop as it is their source of income. For some, it was a source of income. We were against the setting up of Khao Gully in our area, but we request the GMC take up measures to install affordable food stalls.”
The students have written a letter to the GMC Mayor addressing the problem. The letter stated, “...We wish to bring to your attention the challenges our students are currently facing due to the closure of the food shops. The students are compelled to travel considerable distances for lunch, even within the constraints of short breaks between classes. Furthermore, the absence of reasonably priced food establishments in the vicinity adds to their plight. In this regard, we kindly urge you to consider the urgent need for affordable food options within proximity to our campus. This would greatly alleviate the difficulties faced by our students during their academic. We also take this opportunity to express our strong disapproval of certain students who have distorted the matter for their personal gain in the media. We sincerely hope that you will take our genuine concerns into account and facilitate the establishment of accessible food outlets...”
