Guwahati: Assam has witnessed a notable improvement in data-based parameters, including a decline in crime rate and a rise in charge-sheet and conviction percentage until November this year. This has also resulted in a reduction in the load of cases per Investigation Officer (IO), from almost 70 cases per IO to less than 7 cases per IO in three years, from May 2021 to November 2024.
State DGP GP Singh, revealed this, following the State Crime Review for December 2024 convened at Assam Police Headquarters on Monday.
DGP GP Singh on social media stated, “There has been a steady improvement in data-based parameters, with remarkable improvements in crime rate, charge-sheet & conviction percentage. The improvement in disposal of pending criminal cases has reduced the workload on Investigation Officers, leading to further improvements in the quality of investigation that would ultimately lead to a higher rate of charge sheets and convictions. We remain committed to bringing Assam at par with national averages in good time.”
According to the facts and figures supplied by the DGP, the number of crimes per lakh population has also seen a significant dip, with 385.8 in 2019 to 139.2 in 2024, up to November. Also, a substantial reduction in the load of the investigation officers from 69.04 cases to 6.60 cases per IO from May 2021 to November 2024. This has resulted in improved investigation resulting in a higher percentage of charge sheets.
Again, the conviction rate in the state has also risen, as the number of convictions in cases increased from 5.9% or 1,834 cases in 2018 to 22.68% or 6,096 cases in 2024, up to the month of November. The number of charge sheets filed has also marked an increase in percentage terms, from 48.80% in 2019 to 66.45% in 2024, until November.
