Guwahati: Heaps of garbage were found clogging drains along Nabagraha Road near the Guwahati War Cemetery at Silpukhuri, raising concerns about local sanitation and civic responsibility. Residents reported that some individuals have been dumping household waste directly into drains instead of using designated Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) garbage collection points, with several also allegedly avoiding the monthly collection fee.
The accumulation of waste has blocked water flow through the drains, worsening waterlogging and sanitation issues in the area, especially during periods of rain. Local resident Bedanta Bhagowati, speaking with The Sentinel, highlighted the scale of the problem, attributing it to indiscriminate dumping by hillside residents. “People residing on the hillside literally dump everything in this drain. Even though GMC garbage collection vehicles come regularly, people continue to discard waste into the drains,” Bhagowati said.
Items retrieved from the drains during cleaning included nearly 20 mosquito nets, three banana trees, three mattresses, pillows, and thousands of liquor and plastic bottles. Bhagowati criticized the lack of civic responsibility among residents, emphasizing that the situation could have been avoided through proper waste disposal and regular use of the municipal collection system. Residents have urged the community to stop dumping garbage into the drains and called for more effective maintenance of the drainage network to prevent further waterlogging and sanitation problems in the locality.
